As the first UN Ocean Decade programme centered on mapping deep ocean microbiomes and ecosystems, DOME spans all five global oceans and focuses on two strategic areas: hadal trenches and polar oceans. Guided by the innovative People-Microbe-Ocean” (PMO) concept, DOME explores the species diversity, genetic diversity, metabolic diversity, and functional diversity of deep-sea microorganisms; establishes a deep ocean genome (DOG) technology system; builds a global deep ocean and polar ocean microbial resource repository; promotes the protection, sustainable development and utilization of marine bioresources; determine the mutual feedback mechanisms between deep ocean ecosystems and global climate change; and achieves a new paradigm of ocean management and governance driven by science and technology.
